The Dniester is a transboundary river that originates in the Ukrainian Carpathians at an altitude of 900 m, flows through Moldova and reenters Ukraine, where it flows into Black Sea through Dniester estuary.

The name "Dniester" is often interpreted as "big river", and this is not surprising because the length of the Dniester is 1352 km.

Peculiarity of the Dniester in its various landscapes: in the upper reaches - mountain landscapes, rapid flow, rocky shores and picturesque rapids; on the plain - the river slows down, the banks become sloping; in delta - flow velocity decreases so much that the river forms islands overgrown with willows.

The largest tributaries of the Dniester are: Stryi in the upper reaches; Seret, Zbruch, Smotrych and Murafa in the middle reaches; Reut and Byk in the down reaches. In the upper reaches tributaries flow into mainly from the right side, and in the middle Dniester - from the left.

More than 5 million people in Ukraine and more than 2.7 million people in Moldova live now in Dniester basin.

Sources of the Dniester are about ten streams descending from the northern slopes of forested Carpathians. Streams are the same in length and water content, flow into the Dniester very close to the source, that is located on the southwestern slope of Rozluch ridge, near the Vovche village.

Source of the Dniester is a natural monument "Source of Dniester River". In addition to the actual source of the Dniester, coniferous plantations are protected here. Not far from the source lies regional landscape park "Upper Dniester Beskids".

In the forests of the park, forest lily and bear leek enchant with their flowers, and stiff clubmoss spreads with a green carpet. Among the animals on the edges of the forest there are smooth snake and common viper, and in the forests - red deer and roe deer. Spotted salamander is a bright inhabitant of mountain streams. Beautiful bird white stork may occure in the park, and if you are lucky, you can see an owl too.
